Sworn Translation of a Driving Licence for Use in Italy

An official or sworn translation of a driving licence may be required when a foreign driving licence has to be used in Italy.

In particular, holders of driving licences issued by non-EU countries may, subject to the applicable Italian regulations, use their foreign licence in Italy for a limited period after establishing residence in the country, provided that the licence is accompanied by the documentation required by Italian law, which may include an official Italian translation.

A sworn translation completed and certified before the Court of Florence provides an official Italian version of the information contained in the foreign driving licence.

Similarly, an Italian driving licence may need to be translated and officially certified when it is to be presented to authorities or other institutions abroad.

How Is the Sworn Translation of a Driving Licence Carried Out? The procedure normally starts with the submission of a clear colour copy of the driving licence.

The document is translated into the required target language by a qualified translator.

The translation is then combined with the relevant sworn translation statement (verbale di giuramento). The translator appears before the competent office of the Court of Florence and formally swears that the translation is accurate and faithful to the original document.

The completed file therefore generally consists of:

a copy of the driving licence;

the complete translation;

the sworn translation statement;

the official certification or court endorsement relating to the oath.

Depending on the country in which the document will be used, additional formalities such as legalisation or an Apostille may also be required.

Translation of Italian Driving Licences for Use Abroad An Italian driving licence may also need an official translation when it is used outside Italy, especially in countries outside the European Union.

The requirements vary according to the destination country. In some cases, a sworn translation may be sufficient, while in others an International Driving Permit, legalisation, Apostille or additional certification may be required.

For this reason, the requirements of the foreign authority or institution requesting the document should always be checked in advance.

Conversion of a Ukrainian Driving Licence in Italy

Italy and Ukraine have entered into agreements allowing, subject to the conditions established by the applicable regulations, the conversion of eligible Ukrainian driving licences into Italian driving licences without taking a new driving test.

For the conversion procedure before the Italian Motorizzazione Civile, applicants may be required to submit an official or sworn Italian translation of the Ukrainian driving licence, together with the other documents required by the competent authority.

The translation can be sworn before the Court of Florence by a qualified translator.

As conversion rules, eligibility requirements and international agreements may change over time, applicants are advised to verify the current requirements with the competent Motorizzazione Civile before submitting their application.
